Payroll Accountant (Remote Eligible)

Position Description:

Mathematica currently has an opening for an on-call Payroll Accountant! As an on-call Payroll Accountant, you will be part of our Accounting & Finance team performing accurate and timely processing of multi-state payment of wages and all other aspects of payroll, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws. A subject matter expert in payroll matters and continually improve payroll process and assists with the development of payroll procedures by recommending improvements or changes for greater efficiency. You will work with our accounting team in performing month-end close activities, performing a variety of accounting related tasks, custom reporting, data analysis, and routine reconciliations. Exercises independent judgement in carrying out the details of the work according to applicable regulations and company policy and procedures. Requires high level of confidentiality and integrity to ensure staff confidence and protection of the payroll operations and information.

Position Requirements:

Core Responsibilities:

• Processes timely and accurate payroll in accordance with all regulatory and reporting requirements.
• Performs wide variety of record keeping and payroll processing activities, including, but not limited to, computing wages and overtime payments, calculating and recording payroll deductions, processing manuals, wage garnishments, and processing new hires, leaves of absence, and terminations.
• Responds to payroll inquiries of varying complexity.
• Ensures payroll is posted to correct accounting general ledger accounts
• Works closely with Human Resources (HR) to assure accuracy of employee personal information and benefits
• Researches, gathers and provides information regarding internal and external payroll related questions, problems and audit issues
• Maintains current knowledge of applicable state and federal wage and hour laws
• Processes terminations, calculating and preparing final paychecks in accordance with various state laws
• Accurately and timely reconciles quarterly and annual state and federal tax reports
• Balances the payroll accounts by resolving payroll discrepancies
• Month end closing payroll account reconciliations and requirements
• Actively support the advancement of organizational diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, and apply diversity, equity, and inclusion lens across job responsibilities.
• Additional duties may be assigned as needed

Functional Knowledge (Preferred):

• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel (including pivot tables and V-lookups), Outlook,
• Experience working with government contractors highly preferred

Education minimum requirement:

• A BA/BS degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
• Three plus years’ experience in payroll
• A combination of equivalent education and work experience may be substituted for the above requirements.

Certifications:

• Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) or Certified Professional (CPP) certification (preferred)

This position offers an anticipated rate of $38-48 an hour

This position is categorized as “on-call,” and as such, the hours may vary and there may be times when work is not available. Other times, work may be available up to 40 hours per week. Your employment will be classified as “on-call” until the duration of the project(s) or need(s) is complete. 

Typical schedule: Monday-Friday 8am-5pm
