Mathematica is searching for a researcher to join our industry-leading work in the area of value-based care and payment reform. For this position, we seek an individual with experience designing, implementing, and/or supporting healthcare payment reforms, particularly Federal alternative payment models. In this role, you would participate in and provide oversight for tasks related to performance and payment calculations, production of clinician/hospital-specific reports, and analytics to inform program monitoring and decision making. Example projects include:
- Developing and implementing bundled payment rates and reconciliation payments
- Calculating performance scores and value-based payments for clinicians/hospitals
- Developing and producing clinician/hospital feedback reports
- Developing and refining quality performance scoring approaches
Duties of the position:
- Lead multidisciplinary teams tasked with designing, implementing, and/or providing analytic support for value-based purchasing and payment reform programs, including
- Using claims data to calculate performance and value-based payments
- Designing, developing, and producing feedback reports
- Collaborate with federal, state, and other clients and stakeholders through direct interactions and author/review accessible memos, briefs, reports, and presentations
- Serve as subject matter expert for the programs and work with clients to identify and document program requirements
- Translate program requirements into programming specifications
- Contribute to the growth, expertise, and institutional knowledge of other payment reform staff

- PhD (or Master's degree with equivalent experience) in public policy, public administration, public health, sociology, economics, statistics, or a related field
- Three or more years of experience working in health policy or health research
- At least one year working with claims data
- Demonstrated ability to lead activities, manage tasks, and coordinate the work of multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality work to our clients on time
- Strong analytic skills and ability to think critically about issues relating to policy development and implementation. Experience working with Medicare claims data a plus.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including an ability to explain observations and findings to diverse stakeholder audiences including program administrators and policymakers
- Strong organizational skills and high level of attention to detail as well as the flexibility to manage multiple priorities, sometimes simultaneously, under deadlines
- Strong mentorship skills to mentor several junior staff members
- Understanding of Medicare value-based purchasing and alternative payment models

This position offers an anticipated annual base salary of $85,000-$140,000. This position may be eligible for a discretionary bonus based on company and individual performance.
Various federal agencies with whom we contract require that staff successfully undergo a background investigation or security clearances a condition of working on projects. If you work on such a project, you will be required to obtain the requisite security clearance.
