Position Description:

Mathematica applies expertise at the intersection of data, methods, policy, and practice to address complex social challenges and improve well-being around the world. We create and use evidence to help our public and private sector partners improve programs, refine strategies, and advance knowledge. Over the past two decades, we have developed a large portfolio of international development work that spans more than 50 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe. Our work provides actionable learning to guide decision-making and improve outcomes in a range of policy areas, including agriculture, health, climate change, education, workforce development, and energy. 

The Director / Sr. Director - Business Development, International Portfolio will work directly with International Unit Leadership to develop and implement a business development strategy for Mathematica's International Unit, with a particular focus on USAID. The Director / Sr. Director will support developing a strategy to meet annual revenue targets that includes recommendations for investments to win high-priority bids. The Director / Sr. Director will also lead high-priority proposals and may serve in key roles on important Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) projects.  

Responsibilities 

• Assist unit leadership with business development activities such as informing overall strategy, participating in advance positioning activities on priority bids, RFP tracking, and financial analysis, with a particular emphasis on USAID
• Partner with Account Managers to develop a plan to meet with customer stakeholders, understand their business needs, and position us as the preferred contractor
• Identify areas of strategic collaboration, including acquisition opportunities, joint ventures, and contractor teaming arrangements
• Build the reputation of Mathematica’s International Unit with clients, particularly with USAID bureaus and field missions
• Increase Mathematica's field presence and capabilities in priority countries
• Serve as the lead or QA reviewer on technical proposals; reviewing final bids for compliance 
• Prepare budgets for proposals
• Serve as Chief of Party, Project Director, or technical expert on projects
• Conduct research tasks such as preparing draft chapters of reports; performing literature reviews; and acting as a liaison to clients and contracting agencies
• Institutionalize best practices and providing training on business development practices and project implementation
• Together, these responsibilities are expected to lead to a robust pipeline of opportunities, increased share of our portfolio of work at USAID, and growth of our international portfolio. 

Position Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Business Administration, Accounting, Public Administration, Public Policy, or another relevant field; Master’s degree preferred 
• At least 10 years of experience in business development, budget analysis, or project management, preferably related to USAID
• A combination of equivalent education and work experience may be substituted for the above requirements
• Proven success in managing and writing winning proposals for USAID and other international donor agencies
• Experience leading evaluation teams consisting of staff, consultants, subcontractors, and field collection teams—delivering on schedule and budget
• Demonstrated ability to exercise quality control, meeting high technical and editorial standards in written products
• Proficiency in written and spoken English
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
• Experience working in a team environment
• Strong organizational, communication skills, and high level of attention to detail

The Director role offers an anticipated annual base salary range of $130,000 - $180,000. The Sr. Director role offers an anticipated base salary range of $160,000 - $220,000. This position is eligible for a discretionary bonus based on company and individual performance.
