Health Survey Analyst

Mathematica Policy Research is a nationally recognized, nonpartisan firm that conducts social policy research on health, education, family support, employment, disability, and international development. Mathematica’s mission is to improve public well-being by bringing the highest standards of quality, objectivity, and excellence to bear in our work for our clients, which include federal, state, and local government agencies and private foundations.

We are inviting survey analysts to join us in contributing to domestic health policy projects. Our current work includes a wide range of policy topics in health care service delivery and financing, quality measures, and health systems change. Example projects include:

  • evaluating the implementation of Social Security Disability Insurance innovation initiatives aimed at improving earnings and job retention, improving health outcomes, and reducing costs
  • conducting a large annual census of mental health and substance abuse treatment facilities across the country and publishing a resource booklet
  • studying the effects of multi-payer delivery system innovations on health care access, quality, and costs
  • assessing the quality of care in publicly sponsored insurance programs like Medicaid and Medicare

As a survey analyst, you would join our staff of over 400 health research professionals. Many of these professionals have doctoral or master’s degrees and years of substantive experience in public policy, behavioral and social sciences, economics, and public health. Survey analysts typically work on more than one project at a time and are matched to projects that suit their interests and skills, and offer opportunities for professional growth. They participate in key project activities, which vary by project and may include:

  • Developing data collection materials such as survey instruments, interview protocols, interviewer training materials, operations manuals, quality control and data collection specifications
  • Training interviewers and conducting pretest interviews
  • Managing telephone, web, mail and/or field data collection efforts
  • Supporting senior staff in project leadership such as task planning and oversight, progress reporting, monitoring budget and subcontractor activity. Using MS Project and other tools to  monitor project activities to ensure that schedule and budget constraints are met
  • Participating in in-depth interviews, site visits or focus groups and supporting qualitative data collection efforts
  • Providing technical assistance to state and federal health agencies or health care providers (for example,  by designing webinars or responding to questions from providers/stakeholders)
  • Drafting client memos, issue briefs, chapters of reports, and proposals for new projects
  • Assisting with budget revisions and contract proposals
  • Exhibiting initiative to take on new opportunities, further own professional development, and become an organizational leader

Position Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in a social science or related field plus some demonstrated survey research or related experience; or Bachelor’s degree in a social science or related field plus three to five years survey research or related experience; or a combination of equivalent education and work experience may be substituted for the above requirements.
  • Familiarity and experience with data collection tools and methods
  • Strong analytic skills, including knowledge of quantitative and/or qualitative research methods
  • Ability to think critically
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to write clear and concise technical memos and documents
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and careful attention to detail
  • Ability to complete tasks on tight deadlines without compromising quality
  • Familiarity and experience with standard MS packages, such as Excel, Access and Word
  • Ability to deal tactfully and diplomatically with others
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively on teams
  • Willingness to travel to other locations as necessary
  • Willingness to be flexible with work hours and assignments
  • Spanish, or other language fluency is a plus
