Survey Sampling Statistician

Our work yields actionable information to guide decisions in wide-ranging policy areas, from health, education, early childhood, and family support to nutrition, employment, disability, and international development. We are looking for a Survey Sampling Statistician to join our team.

Mathematica is seeking statisticians who are eager to use their statistical expertise to support our mission to improve public well-being by bringing the highest standards of quality, objectivity, and excellence to bear on the provision of information collection and analysis to our clients.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute sampling and weighting plans for various surveys ranging from large national studies to smaller ones targeting specific populations
  • Apply a wide array of statistical methods and analytic techniques in support of survey research
  • Prepare technical reports and presentation of statistical methods
  • Bring creative ideas to business development and actively participate in submitting proposals and obtaining new projects
  • Oversee and mentor junior statisticians
  • Present findings to policy, methodological, and researcher audiences and publish in professional journals

Position Requirements:

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in statistics, biostatistics, mathematics, survey methodology, or quantitative social science - or equivalent combination of education and experience. A minimum of a MS in statistics, biostatistics, or quantitative social science and five to seven years of experience is required if the candidate does not have a Ph.D.
  • Coursework and/or experience in survey sample design is essential
  • Background or interest in social policy research.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including and ability to translate research findings for a policy audience
  • Ability to work well in teams
  • Required knowledge, experience, and demonstrated ability to conduct statistical programming in SAS, R, or Stata

Preferred coursework and/or experience in one or more of the following quantitative research areas:

  • Weighting, variance estimation for complex sample survey data, imputation, survey design methodology (especially on survey paradata, total survey error, and adaptive survey design), or data disclosure avoidance.
  • Multivariate modeling, experimental designs, propensity score matching and weighting, nonprobability samples and data calibration, and data linkage.
