Mathematica applies expertise at the intersection of data, methods, policy, and practice to improve well-being around the world. Our work yields actionable information to guide decisions in wide-ranging policy areas, from health, education, early childhood, and family support to nutrition, employment, disability, and international development.
Mathematica is working with the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston (Boston Fed), The Boston Foundation (TBF), and TBF’s community partners in Massachusetts to field a state-wide survey called the Massachusetts Economic Conditions and Household Opportunity Survey (Mass ECHOS). Through this survey, the Boston Fed seeks to learn more about economic conditions among households across Massachusetts. Several studies look at household finances across the country, but our goal is to focus on this topic within our state. Data collected from the survey will be used to inform strategies that can support greater economic opportunity.
The survey includes over 30,000 addresses from across the state. Residents at these addresses are invited to complete either a web-based or hardcopy survey questionnaire. To help improve response to the survey, field data collectors will conduct in-person follow-up to selected addresses that have not yet completed the survey.
Responsibilities Include:
- Managing assigned cases and documenting all follow-up efforts.
- Traveling to visit potential survey participants at the address listed in each assigned case. Answering questions, addressing concerns, and promoting completion of the survey.
- Providing a laptop device to those who agree to take part during the in-person visit. Upon completion of the 20-minute web-based survey, field data collectors provide a $50 gift card to the person who completed the survey.
The field follow-up efforts take place from October 27 to December 3, 2025.

Position Requirements:
- Resourceful, dependable, and possess excellent communication skills.
- Strong organization skills; detailed-oriented.
- Availability to work at a minimum of 30 hours per week. Your schedule must include at least 1 weekend day and two evening shifts on weekdays (5-8 p.m.)
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Possess a valid driver’s license and/or have access to reliable car transportation.
- Located in Massachusetts with the ability to travel locally at least 3 days per week.
- Previous field experience or experience working with the public is preferred.
- Preferred bilingual in: Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Vietnamese, or Chinese. Candidates will be asked to complete testing on language proficiency and fluency for the additional language to be considered for the bilingual role.
Attendance and successful completion of all scheduled training sessions is required to work on the project. Training will occur October 27-28, 2025.
This position offers an anticipated hourly pay range of $24-$25 per hour, depending upon skills and experience. Bilingual applicants will be asked to complete a test to demonstrate language proficiency.
This position is categorized as on-call, and as such, the hours may at times vary based on project needs. Your employment will be classified as on-call until the duration of the project(s) or need(s) is complete.
