Family Support Researcher

Mathematica seeks a Family Support Researcher to work in the Children, Youth, and Families Division to conduct studies and program improvement in the areas of strengthening family relationships, responsible fatherhood, and teen pregnancy prevention. Examples of ongoing work include:

  • Identifying implementation challenges and promising solutions for healthy marriage and relationship education programs and working with programs to implement these solutions
  • Identifying strategies to improve father engagement across a range of federal programs
  • Developing and testing innovative training approaches and curriculum modules for prevention programs for adolescents
  • Examining the implementation and effectiveness of teen pregnancy prevention programs
  • Providing training and technical assistance to federal grantees in designing and conducting implementation and impact evaluations

Duties for this position may include:

  • Designing studies to evaluate programs and policies, conducting analyses, reviewing and synthesizing existing evidence, and drafting briefs and reports
  • Working collaboratively to improve programs using rapid cycle learning to iteratively test implementation strategies and gather information on their success
  • Helping program administrators and policymakers make decisions by organizing, analyzing, and presenting large amounts of data
  • Guiding programs and policymakers in using evidence to make decisions
  • Providing assistance to programs and other organizations on conducting evaluations
  • Presenting findings to policy, practitioner, and researcher audiences

You would join our growing interdisciplinary staff of psychologists, sociologists, economists, and public policy researchers in the Children, Youth, and Families (CYF) division within the Human Services unit. Position Requirements:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in psychology, sociology, economics, public policy, or a related field or a combination of equivalent education and work experience
  • Extensive knowledge of federal programs and approaches for supporting children, youth, and families, such as healthy marriage and relationship education; responsible fatherhood; sexual health education; or positive youth development
  • Strong quantitative or qualitative analytical skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including experience communicating research questions, designs, and findings in non-technical language to program practitioners, state and federal agency staff, and program funders
  • Experience interacting with federal grantees or other program practitioners through activities such as training and technical assistance, program or curriculum development, or continuous quality improvement is desirable
  • Work experience at a human services program or agency is desirable
